Fact of the Day: First Cosmonaut Was a Dog

The Soviet Union had some balls launching the Sputnik. They decided to 1up themselves by sending a living organism in the next rocketship. Laika, a stray dog found in Russia was picked to endure space. She died on the mission from the extreme heat, and became the first living being from earth to enter orbit, and also die within it. Poor puppy.
