Ghouls N' Ghosts (Sega Genesis/Megadrive) Review

The Ghosts N Goblins series is known for it's frustrating difficulty, and it's legion of hardcore fans.

You really do have to be hardcore to enjoy this game. It's brutally hard. The first level on easy is still harder than most games out there.

You really only have about 2 chances not to die. Once with armor, and then in your boxer shorts. Once you fall into one of the many traps, there's not much time left. Game over.

I can understand why so many people like the game. However I can't stand putting myself through so much pain. Games are suppose to be fun, not claw into your head and rip your soul in half. I like challenges, but I don't like impossible tasks. This was originally an arcade game, and I'm sure Capcom made so much money sucking up quarters with such an daunting adventure.

Score: 4 out of 10

Things I Hate: Altered Beast

I've heard for a couple years that this one was pretty bad.

It was originally an arcade game and it shows. Most side scrolling arcade games kinda sucked ass to begin with. You're really just an awkward human punching and kicking random monsters.

Then you turn all Furry and become stronger, but even that's still lame and boring.

Things I Hate: Kid Chameleon

It had a decent premise and has it's fair share of fans, but I'm not one of them.

I don't really remember to much about the game off the top of my head, but I wasn't too fond of the combat or the game-play.

Though I'll give them bonus points for the power-ups though.

Things I Like: Golden Axe II

Even though I don't think it's good as the first game, it's a decent adventure.

It plays almost the same with a few new moves, and a bump up graphically.

Too bad the level design just isn't as good. Oh well, it's still good mindless fun.

Things I Like: Golden Axe

One of my favorite and most played games from the Sega Genesis.

I loved playing co-op with my brother, and fighting over who got to ride the dragon.

Loved the special attacks, so fucking epic.

The final boss was a son of a bitch though. Cheating motherfucker.

Things I Hate: Alex Kidd In The Enchanted Castle

Boy did I not like the original Master System game. So when I heard this one was even worse, I scratched my head thinking how is that possible?

Frankly, they're right, it's even worse of a game than it's predecessors.

And Sega fans wonder why we don't see Alex Kidd anymore

Things I Hate: Ristar

I've tried giving this game so many chances. I just can't get into it.

Which is a shame, because the game has a pretty solid following, and good review scores from past to present.

However I didn't like the controls, or the game-play too much. I didn't even get to a cool part like this.

Things I Hate: Flicky

I only played this because it was put in with Sonic Mega Collection on Gamecube. It only relates to Sonic, because Flicky made a cameo in Sonic's 3D Blast.

Honestly, the real game is based off an arcade game I believe. Very simple, kinda like Joust in a few ways. Make sure you pick up the other birds before the cats kill your ass.

It's really just too boring, simple, and too damn hard to enjoy.

Things I Like: Sonic & Knuckles

This was one of my favorite games as a kid, even though I sucked at it.

Loved the fake "super graphics" for the time at the title screen.

It played like most 2D Sonic games do, and it's much better than Sonic 3.

Even though Knuckles had a cool gliding move, I like playing more as Sonic for some reason. But the excellent levels are worth playing twice.

One of the coolest things about the game was the attachable cartridge. If you plugged Sonic 2 or 3 in the slot, you could play as Knuckles in either game.

Pretty nifty!

Things I Hate: Jurassic Park (Sega Genesis)

I don't remember a whole lot about this game, except that I hated it with a fiery passion.

I don't even remember playing as a human.

But I do remember playing as a raptor. Ugh, the levels were dark, muddy, and controlling a killer raptor is actually pretty lame.

Things I Hate: Vectorman

I liked the game when I bought it as a kid, even though I cheated a bit.

It's almost the Sega Genesis' Donkey Kong Country. Graphically amazing for the system, but years later it was more style than substance.

It does some neat things and it has it's moments, but it's too hard for it's own good, and a lot of the levels start to become a chore.

Things I Hate: Sonic The Hedgehog 3

I really like all the main Sonic games on Genesis except Sonic 3. I don't know what happened here, but Sega fucked up.

It introduces Knuckles and everything, but it's basically the same Sonic & Tails game-play from Sonic 2.

What I don't like is the level design. A lot of it feels very sloppily done, and too difficult in some areas. I've given the game so many chances but I still don't like it.

Fact of the Day: Sega Mega-Drive

Though us Americans knew it as the Sega Genesis, in most of the world it was called the Sega Mega-Drive.

Things I Hate: Columns (Sega Genesis)

Columns was Sega's answer to Tetris. Guess which series is still re-released?

It's not exactly the worst puzzle game I've ever had the chance to play, but it's very bland and simple.

Things I Hate: Sonic Spinball

Played this as a kid, and even gave it another shot through re-releases, but I still don't like this game

Is it that bad? Well not really. But it really is nothing more than a boring pinball game.

Though I can admit that I do at least like the new rules and special additions that Spinball does versus traditional pinball. Like the ability to save your ass from a fall.

Things I Hate: Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine

I couldn't stand this game as a kid, and I sure can't stand it now through re-releases like Sonic Mega Collection.

The game is basically Puyo-Pop with Sonic and friends. Even the weird cartoon villains are in this game.

It's not a bad game in it's own right I suppose. I like my Tetris, but I'm not a fan of this puzzle game. Just can't get into it.
